What is required to found a company?

The requirements depend heavily on the chosen legal form. Founding a sole proprietorship requires no minimum capital, and you can start immediately. Registration in the commercial register is only mandatory from an annual turnover of CHF 100,000. An GmbH (LLC) requires a share capital of CHF 20,000, which must be paid into a bank account. A AG (Ltd) requires CHF 100,000 in share capital, of which at least CHF 50,000 must be paid in. Both legal forms also require notarization and registration in the commercial register. Regardless of the legal form, all founders must register with the compensation office for AHV (OASI) and IV. From an annual turnover of CHF 100,000, VAT registration is also mandatory. The founding process itself takes about three weeks for a GmbH; a sole proprietorship can be set up much faster.
